What is Computerized ADHD Testing?

Objective Measures:

Computerized ADHD tests aim to provide objective data about ADHD-related symptoms, complementing traditional clinical assessments.

Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs):

Many computerized tests are based on CPTs, which involve presenting stimuli (like shapes or letters) and measuring how quickly and accurately a person responds.

Examples of Tests:
  • TOVA (Test of Variables of Attention): A widely used CPT that measures sustained attention, impulsivity, and response time variability.
  • QbTest: A commercially available test that combines a CPT with motion tracking to assess attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
  • QbCheck: A remote version of the QbTest for online assessment.

How it Works:

  • Visual/Auditory Stimuli: The test presents visual or auditory stimuli (like shapes, letters, or sounds) on a computer screen.
  • Response Tasks: The person is asked to press a button or switch when they see or hear a specific stimulus, or to refrain from pressing when they see or hear a different stimulus.
  • Motion Tracking: Some tests, like the QbTest, use motion tracking to measure activity levels during the test.
What’s Measured:
  • Sustained Attention: The ability to maintain focus over time.
  • Impulsivity: The tendency to respond hastily without proper consideration.
  • Response Time Variability: The consistency of response speed.
  • Hyperactivity: Measured through motion tracking in some tests.
How Results are Used:
  • Diagnostic Aid: The results are compared to age- and gender-matched norms to help clinicians determine if a person’s symptoms are consistent with ADHD.
  • Treatment Planning: The data can also be used to monitor treatment effectiveness and make adjustments to treatment plans.
Advantages:
  • Objectivity: Computerized tests provide objective data, reducing reliance on subjective interpretations.
  • Standardization: The tests are standardized, ensuring consistent administration and scoring.
  • Efficiency: The tests can be completed relatively quickly, saving time for clinicians and patients.
Limitations:
  • Not a Standalone Test: Computerized tests should be used in conjunction with other assessments, such as clinical interviews and behavioral observations.
  • Cost: The cost of the tests can be a barrier for some individuals.
  • Technical Issues: Technical problems with the equipment or software can sometimes occur.
